Starting kids in golf Part 2
Blog 20/365 I wrote yesterday about getting kids started into golf, and about some of the hurdles that can appear to get in the way of doing so. Today I’ll look at the snobbish perception of golf, and the difficulty of learning the game. Survey a group of people about golf and you will find many varied answers, and one that until recent years was that golf was quite a snobbish game, played by the elite. Having spent my life around the game, I can honestly say that golf is every bit as inclusive as other sports. I have dealt with members who come from all walks of life and many varied professions. Yes, there are very traditional golf clubs where seemingly antiquated traditions hold fast, but dig a little deeper and you will find a real mix of backgrounds and personalities. Golf is a game that brings people together, and and it is not unusual to find people with very little in common coming together over their shared love of the game. It doesn’t matter what background your child is from, their is a pathway into golf that will get them involved. Ahhh, but golf is so difficult, how will my son or daughter ever get any better? Get them involved in some lessons with a PGA Professional who can show them the basics, let them practice, and see what they can do. Golf clubs are amazing for encouraging juniors, and there is often great support offered, voluntarily, by Junior Convenors within the club structure to help get kids playing in competitions, making new friends, and enjoying club life. Because golf combines an individual sport with a social element, you often find kids gain a desire to improve to the standards of the best players in the club, and this can be amazing to watch as they progress and learn the game, develop social skills, and become amazing little humans! Get your kids involved in golf, it may be one of the best gifts you ever give them!
