Consistency...the holy grail of golfers 5/365
I have been lucky enough to have helped a lot of golfers during my career as a PGA Professional. Often, a coaching session or 'golf lesson' will begin with me getting to know the person, and finding out what their expectations are of the next 30-60 minutes. Oftentimes, they are looking for consistency. I would say that as many s 90% of the people I meet as a coach answer my question 'What can I help you with?' with the C Word.
What does it even mean? Sometimes they want to have more consistent scores...ok...sometimes they want to have more consistent strike patterns...ok...sometimes they want to have fun more consistently on the course. One word, lots of different, and often very personal meanings. It's a big concept, and a bit of a catch all phrase that I often try to breakdown and make into something achievable for my students.
One place I will often start is asking about their ball flight, and does it have consistent shape or height. 'No' is often the answer, and this is often a great place to start figuring out how the player can begin creating the mythical consistency that they are looking for.
Deciding on a shot shape, and sticking to it the whole way round the course can be a great starting point, and will often ease any anxiety or fears that a player has. If you're unsure how to create a shot shape, come see me! It's often a case that a couple of small tewaks to your existing setup and swing can start producing the desired effect...
