Roe Park Golf Club Press Report Week Ending 22nd April 2018
McLaughlin wins BG’s Takeaway Spring League Stableford at Roe Park
It was all systems go at Roe Park last week as a spell of warmer, dry weather blew in across the province giving a helping hand to many a parkland course greenkeeper and to the many golfers who turned out as a result.

There was plenty to play for with players scrambling to get vital points for their respective Spring League teams going into the penultimate week of the BG’s Takeway sponsored competition. The first chance of some points was in Thursdays Club Stableford which was played in great weather conditions with a few challenging pin positions set up to offer some risk and reward shot choices. Stevie Hamill took it all in his stride as he walked to victory with a solid total of 37 points having set himself up nicely with a great front nine score of 19 points. Left hander Paul Cobb found a little form to secure the runner-up spot having scored 36 points and Alan Loughery played well for his 35 points to take third.
Saturday and Sunday saw a combined Club Stableford again played in good conditions allowing for some decent scoring. William McLaughlin was in a league of his own as he took the overall victory with his powerhouse performance giving him a brilliant score of 40 points. A brilliant front nine of 22 points allowed him to coast home with 18 on the back although a few wayward shots on the 13th hole briefly threatened to derail what in the end was a superb card. Gary Marshall, Andy Young and Conor Kelly fought it out for the remaining places with all three scoring 38 points with count back being used to decide the places. Gary’s back nine of 19 points was enough to give him the runner-up spot ahead of Conor in third who scored 16 points on his back nine. Andy was awarded the gross prize thanks to a brilliant 1 over par round 71 on Sunday.
The B.G’s Takeaway sponsored Spring League entered its fifth and penultimate week with the team of Stubby Boyd, Eamon Brown, James McGuinness and Ornie McIlroy still in the lead with 374 points. Still in second place and a little closer than last week are Marty McVeigh, John McKay, Neville Martin and Alan Thompson. In joint second are the team of Sean Hasson, Gary Campbell, Frank Boyd and Mervyn Dolan. With six teams all within 12 points of the leaders it’s shaping up to be a very exciting final week of the Spring League.
This coming week sees the last week of the B.G’s sponsored Spring League with Club Stableford competitions on Thursday, Saturday & Sunday. The Ladies Section sees a Club Stableford on Wednesday.
