Caughey wins first Strokeplay of the year at Roe Park
With the season well and truly underway at Roe Park the resort saw a huge turnout of golfers over the start of the Easter fortnight. The weather was cold but mostly dry which was enough to get everyone in the mood for securing some much needed points for their respective Spring League teams. First up was the Club Stableford on Thursday which saw James McGuinness take the victory thanks to a superb score of 40 points. Seamus Kealey and Stephen Boyd fought it out for the runner-up spot with both shooting 38 points but Stephens better back nine score meant Seamus having to settle for third spot.

The weekend saw the first stroke play competition of the year with a huge turnout eager to test their skills against the course which was set up well for a good score.
Mark Caughey (picture to right) took advantage as he fired a superb nett round of 62 which was 8 better than his playing handicap. Asked how he felt after his superb round Mark replied “It could have been even better, I definitely left a few out there”. Darren McVeigh fought hard for a nett round 64 and was rewarded with the runner-up spot. Eamon Barkley took third thanks to a superb back nine giving him the best of five players who all scored nett rounds of 66. Nigel Mearns continued his fine form as he took the best gross prize with a level par round of 70.
The BG’s Takeaway sponsored Spring League saw the team of Stephen Boyd, Eamon Brown, James McGuinness and Ornie McIlroy storm to the top of the leader board in the second week with a combined total of 155 points. This was thanks to the superb efforts of James who scored 40 points and Stephen who scored 39 points. The runner-up spot is currently occupied by the team of Alex Steele, Ruari O’Connor, Derek Powell and Malcolm Stuart who are just a point behind on 154.
Resident PGA Professional Michael McCrudden and Roe Park Resort are excited to announce the creation of a 6hole golf course which is now available to play. Three holes which run alongside the main 18hole course are played twice with two flags on each green. This is a fantastic initiative for beginners, juniors and families looking to enjoy the game of golf without the pressure of playing on a busy 18hole golf course.
Roe Park Golf Club will be hosting an “Introduction to Junior Golf” taster session on Thursday at the Driving Range from 4pm to 6pm with PGA Professionals Michael and Shaun Devenney providing the coaching. This is a completely free session and is open to all children aged 6 onwards. There will loads of fun activities and information on club membership as well as PGA coaching.
This coming week sees the BG’s Takeway Spring League continue into the Easter fortnight with club stablefords on Thursday and Sunday. Saturday also sees the very first Monthly Medal sponsored as always by S.J.Mitchell & Co. There will be a Ladies club stableford sponsored by Claire Spratt on Wednesday. To book a tee time or for any other enquiries call the very helpful and friendly staff at The Golf Shop on 02877760105.
